What is a monograph?
A monograph is a major contribution on a specific area to technical literature related to the National Institute of Standards and Technology's scientific and technical activities.

What is a NIST Special Publication (SP)?
A NIST Special Publication includes proceedings of conferences sponsored by NIST, NIST annual reports, and other special publications appropriate to this grouping such as wall charts, pocket cards, and bibliographies.

What is a NIST Interagency Report (IR)?
A NIST Interagency Report is a special series of interim or final reports on work performed by NIST for outside sponsors (both government and nongovernment). In general, initial distribution is handled by the sponsor; public distribution is by the National Technical Information Service, Springfield, VA 22161, in paper copy or microfiche form.

What is the difference between a publication and a paper?
While traditionally defined as a form of distribution, publications are herein defined as larger reports published and distributed under the auspices of NIST. A publication may include proceedings of NIST sponsored conferences, NIST annual reports and other special publications appropriated to this grouping such as wall charts, pocket cards, and bibliographies. Publications are typically larger than papers, and in most cases, contain collections of papers.

Papers are sometimes referred to as articles, and usually cover a broad range of subjects, with major emphasis on measurement methodology and the basic technology underlying standardization. Papers also include, from time to time, survey articles on topics closely related to the National Institute of Standards and Technology's technical and scientific programs. Typically shorter in length, papers are usually published in a medium such as a book, magazine, professional journal, or non-NIST sponsored conference proceedings (i.e., published by a non-NIST entity).
