ISR11 Scientific Report No. ISR-11 Information Storage and Retrieval Operating Instructions for the SMART Text Processing and Document Retrieval System chapter M. E. Lesk Harvard University Gerard Salton Use, reproduction, or publication, in whole or in part, is permitted for any purpose of the United States Government. 11-6 indicate the success or failure of the run, relative to other runs. The instructions to be used to regulate these procedures are described in part 3; the data needed by the programs are discussed in part [OCRerr]. 2.2. Tape Setup The tapes used by S[OCRerr]T are named AONE, ATWO, ATHREE, ... AEIGHT, BONE, BTWO, BTHR[OCRerr][OCRerr], ..., BSIX. By means of two internal tables, these names are translated first into logical tape ixumbers and then into physical tape unit addresses. This last translation takes place using the operating system table (IOU), and SW[OCRerr]T is therefore adaptable to almost any tape assignment of the individual monitor system. To aid in running SMART under a given monitor, the first table (which translates SMART tape names to logical numbers) is variable at object time through the normal specification system. Unless altered in this way, the SMART tapes correspond to the 7O9[OCRerr] tape drives with the same names under the (Iou) table of the Harvard monitor (see Table 1). Because of this convention, the distinction between SMART tape AFIVE (for ex[OCRerr]nple) and the physical drive AS will not be D[OCRerr]de in this writeup, although the correspondence is indirect. SMART assumes' that input will be on [OCRerr] (actually ATWO) in accordance with the practice in use for most EMS operating systems. Output print is placed on A3; punching is done through the offline punch tape [OCRerr]. The SMART program tape is placed on B3; it is a normal EMS chain tape (see part 5.3). The library tape is mounted on unit B5; any input data tape goes on A6. All remaining tapes (A4, A5, A7, A8, Bl, B2, [OCRerr]) are used as scratch tapes. A4 is needed for any loo[OCRerr]p, and is also used if AN[OCRerr]SER MEDIUM or AN[OCRerr]ER LONG is requested. A5 is needed for the lookup, and for
