The University of Michigan Digital Library Project

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan

http://www.si.umich.edu/UMDL/

The University of Michigan Digital Library Project (NSF-UMDL) is a multidisciplinary collaboration among faculty and staff throughout the University of Michigan. Initial use and evaluation of the NSF-UMDL will take place in science classes in Ann Arbor, Michigan high schools and the Stuyvesant High School in New York City, as well as instruction and research at the University. Access will also be available through Ann Arbor and New York City public libraries. External partners to the project include: IBM, Elsevier Science, Apple Computer, Bellcore, UMI International, McGraw-Hill, Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Corporation, and Kodak.

The content will emphasize a diverse collection, focused on earth and space sciences, which can satisfy the needs of many different types of users. The content will be supplied by publishers, although the project will eventually allow all users to publish their work. A related project, the Journal Storage Project (JSTOR), will digitize and make available all issues from the first publication through 1990 of ten economics journals to the NSF-UMDL.

Information Retrieval (Z39.50): Application Service Definition and Protocol Specification.

The Z39.50 specification is a client/server based protocol for Information Retrieval. It specifies procedures and structures for a client to search a database provided by a server, retrieve database records identified by a search, scan a term list, and sort the result set.

The Library of Congress is the Maintenance Agency for this specification.

National Institute of Standards & Technology - The NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND INFORMATION RETRIEVAL GROUP works with industry, academia and other government agencies to promote the use of more effective and efficient techniques for manipulating (largely) unstructured textual information, especially the browsing, searching, and presentation of that information.
